Karam is a Hindi Television series aired on SAB in 2001. The story revolves around Manasi, the much-adored daughter of the Zaveri household. The plot of the story reveals itself after a marriage proposal for Manasi reaches Zaveri household from Jai Rai, the scion of the affluent Rai household. Since the family found it to be a suitable proposal from all aspects, the two families readily agree to take things forward, and hence, they fix the marriage. However, something unexpected happens between Jai and Manasi, who then proceed to call off the wedding. This perplexes the rest of the family, especially her mother who notices changes in Manasi and finds her becoming increasingly distraught. After persistent prodding, Manasi reveals to her mother that Jai molested her while they were together, this enraged her mother, who then breaks the alliance. As a result the families then become embittered, as their relations sour.
However, as Manasi tries to rebuild her life, fate plays a cruel game with her when she learns that she is pregnant with Jai’s child. This brings the prospect of family’s honor at stake, pressure began to build up on Manasi to marry her ‘abuser’ to save her family honor and she yields. The serial explores the varied dimensions of moral right and wrong, and how the apparently uptight norms cause immense misery to individuals.
