Draupadi was a mythological serial aired on Sahara One in the year 2001. The serial had a new perspective on theIndian epic Mahabharat from a woman's point of view.It threw a new light on contemporary India and the general condition of women in the country in those mythological times was very effectively displayed in the serial. The serial was conceptualized by Prem Krishan and Sunil Mehta and directed by Surendra Mohan.
The role of Draupadi was played by Mrinal Kulkarni, a famous Marathi screen actress supporting actors were Parikshit Sahni and Rahul Bhatt amongst others. Draupadi in this serial was characterized as obstinate woman, but definitely not arrogant or disrespectful. Draupadi, born out of a fire from yajna was in love with Arjuna and never wanted to marry five Pandavas but she had to bow to her fate. Her special relationship with Krishna and dutiful relations with her five husbands simultaneously were very beautifully depicted in the serial by the director as well as the actor, Mrinal Kulkarni.
The serial was tracing the life of Draupadi undergoing a journey of searching oneself which ended with her death.in the serial it is shown as if she was born in mission. She was destined to do things to prove her strength among the cruel men and to keep her head held high in every tough situation she went through.In one of the scenes while walking with her husbands towards the heaven she falls on the way because she loved Arjuna more than others.
The women’s' issues raised in the serial is as crucial these days as it was back in the times of Draupadi. The serial was very much appreciated by Indian audiences because of the ancient scene created and the work of draupadi by Mrinal Kulkarni was very much appreciated by the audience who stood to be the centre character of the serial. The serial was telecasted in 2001 on Sahara One channel in 36 episodes and gained much popularity among the Indian audience
