The 32nd National Film Award presented by Directorate of Film Festivals in 1984.The Ceremony took place in June 1985.The awards were organised by The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India for the excellence in cinematic achievements of Indian Cinema.Every year a national council is appointed by the government of India who decides the awarding merit for the best of Indian cinema which is then awarded by The President of India.These awards are on the National level.Therefore they are considered equivalent to the American Academy Awards.
In 32nd National Film Award, three more new categories were included along with Best Feature Award, they are as follows Best Debut Film of the Director, Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Children’s Film which were awarded Swarna Kamal(Golden Lotus). Also, some more new categories were also featured with 32nd National Film Award for Best Supporting Role, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design and Best Film on Other Social Issues were awarded Rajat Kamal(Silver Lotus).
Also, the Best Feature Film each in all the languages other than specified in Schedule VII in the Constitution were also awarded, Rajat Kamal. Another category of Non- Best Feature Film for non-feature film sections are also awarded new awards with Swarna Kamal for both film director and film producer. And there is another new award introduced for Best Writing in Cinema sections namely Best Film Critic and awarded with Rajat Kamal.
