Baichung Bhutia is an Indian Footballer who plays for Sikkimese-Bhutia, as a striker. Born on 15th December 1976 in Tinkitam, Sikkim. His parents were both farmers in Sikkim, did not really give attention to their son’s love for sports, But due to the support of his uncleKarma Bhutia he joined in school at ST. Xaviers School in Pakyong. When he was just at the age of nine he won a football scholarship from SAI, which allowed him to join the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok. When he was sixteen he left school to join a professional league team; East Bengal F.C in Kolkata. After spending two years with East Bengal F.C he was sold to JCT Mills in Phagwara, the team which later went onto becomes champions that season (1996-97). During his debut season with JCT Mills he was the top scorer of the league, this fine show of performance was enough to get him his first international call. His International debut came in the Nehru cup. Bhutia was also named the “1996 Indian Player of the Year”. Bhutia also became the 2nd Indian footballer to play professionally in Europe after Bengali origin Mohammed Salim. He signed a three-year contract with Bury, and also had some unsuccessful trials with Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa. Due to facing visa problems Bhutia could not make his debut, till 3rd, October 1999 against Cardiff City. He came on as a substitute replacing Ian Lawson and played an important role in creating the second goal, which was scored by Darren Bullock after Bhutia’s shot was deflected into his path. After staying at England for the rest of the season he was released from his club and later returned to India to join Mohun Bagan. Baichung Bhutia is considered to be one of the greatest footballer India or the whole Indian Subcontinent has produced for the last century, who played in Europe.
