The backdoor pilot for this series aired on January 24, 2018, episode of The Goldbergs called “The Goldbergs: 1990 Something.” The Goldbergs was set in the 1980s at William Penn Academy, while Schooled being the spin-off, it set in the 1990s at the same place. AJ Michalka provides the voice-over narration and also has done the character of Lainey Lewis. Tim Meadows as John Glascott, who serves as the principal of the academy. Glascott leads a faculty of teachers on mentoring students with his wildly different views. His communicative approach to caring students is contrary to coach Mellor's belief that physical training brings out the best in students. Bryan Callen fits like a glove in the character of Rick Mellor, the coach at the academy.
