For a Bengali, football is synonymous with eternal love. The game elicits a deep passion among football fans of all ages in the state. Witness the most prominent football league in Bengal, in which Kolkata will compete against some of the best teams from the districts. Prepare to be a part of the football fever that begins on 26 May 2019. The new season at Kolkata Maidan began with a U-19 Kolkata Derby, as arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan clashed in the Zed Bangla Football League final, hosted at the East Bengal club pitch.
To increase the entertainment value of the tournament, the organizers came up with an out-of-the-box idea of dividing the matches into four quarters of 15 minutes each. Both young teams had won all their league matches and were set to meet in the grand final of the event presented by Zed Group in collaboration with the Indian Football Association (IFA).
Following that, there was plenty of drama as the home crowd was upset with the referee's decision to award a penalty. The supporters started hurling bottles onto the pitch, targeting the match officials. Due to security concerns, the referee promptly stopped the game, which was never replayed. This competition was primarily an entertainment spectacle with very little football. The promoters were more concerned with on-field drama and theatrics than producing a meaningful football tournament.
