The film is power-packed with horror, drama, and bone-chilling elements.

Plot

The plot consists of two stories that run in parallel with each other.

It begins with a man named Vasanth. He is an artist working on a story about a haunted forest named Mayavanam. During his research, one of the writers on the show that he is working on, Ram, warns him to be careful. Ram, the writer, tells Vasanth the story of a book called Asylum by Kate, which talks about mentally ill people put into asylums and forcefully experimented on. He learns of the existence of one such person named Maya, who had lost her daughter. As he goes deeper into his research about Maya and Mayavanam, strange and eerie events seem to unfold around him, affecting his friends and loved ones. Vasanth is then provoked to uncover the darkness obscuring the truth of Mayavanam.

Simultaneously, another story unfolds alongside Vasanth's. Apsara is a single mother who works in ad films. She struggles under the weight of debt. Her friend, Swathi, works at RK Studios. The company has recently released a film called Irul. As a promotional event for the same, RK Studious offers a cash reward of ₹5 Lacs to watch the film until the end without being frightened. Despite Swathi's many warnings, Apsara signs up for it in a desperate bid to win the cash reward. However, when she begins to watch the film, she realizes something terrifying.

Towards the film's end, the paths of Vasanth and Apsara collide in a mindblowing plot-twist.

Star Performance

Nayanthara plays the lead role of Apsara. She portrays the dedication of being a single mother incredibly well. However, there are times when she fails to capture the absolute horror of the film with her expressions and her body language. As a result, her performance seems a bit underwhelming at times and dampens the film's mood.

Aari Arjun has also done a good job, making the film all the more gripping with his acting. His curiosity and will to explore translates outside the film and into the audience. His acting makes the film a rather interesting one to watch.

Analysis

The plot of Mayuri is excellently written. It is a story that relies on the classics of horror while also bringing its elements of uniqueness to the table. It has some elements that are overused and typical of horror movies (headless torsos, long-haired ghosts, etc). As a result the film feels slightly predictable. But the writers make it one of a kind by bringing unexpected plot twists in the end. Initially, the plot may seem repetitive, but the writing quickly makes up for that as the story progresses.

The hero of the film, however, is the cinematography. The two stories of Vasanth and Apsara are captured in black-and-white and color respectively, which is a wonderful detail to add. Sathyan Sooryan perfectly captures the mood of the plot with every shot of his camera. He does an excellent job of making the film as unsettling as possible.

The background score also adds to the eriness of Mayuri. The soundtrack was composed by Ron Ethan Yohann Ron Ethan Yohann, credited as Fen Viallee was born >> Read More... . He carefully picks out musical numbers that perfectly complement each scene. There are creepy numbers that will make you uncomfortable, but also emotional numbers that tell the story of a mother and daughter who only have each other.

What's There?

  • Amazing visual effects
  • Good plot

What's Not There?

  • Poorly executed at times, which makes the film predictable.

Verdict

For all of its flaws, there are a multitude of reasons why Mayuri is an excellent film. The plot, the visuals, the music, and the acting all come together to create a classic horror film with a twist. Mayuri is a must-watch for all horror lovers.
