Plot
Vasu and his mother reach Vaizag after being sent from their homeland as refugees. In a turn of events, Vasu is sent to jail in connection with a murder. His thirst for wealth makes him a ruffian, and he turns out to be a powerful gangster in the course of time. What happens next? What is the challenge he faced? Was he caught? The rest of the film deals with all these.
Star Performance
Varun Tej tried to prove that he could do any role. Like Gaddalakonda Ganesh, he has tried something new in this film. Meenakshi Chaudhary didn’t have anything to do in this film. The same for Norah and Saloni, who fit in the roles but didn’t have any significance in showcasing their talent.
Analysis
The story is already known to everyone. The director has honed the script to suit the Telugu sensibilities. Though it is a known premise, there are chances to make it exciting. But we can’t see anything special in the transition from Vasu to Matka Vasu. The emotional scenes lack depth. If the characters had been developed well, it would’ve helped to elevate the performances. The second half has the CBI intervention and scenes involving gambling. Those scenes should’ve been shot well with some interesting twists. But, they fell flat and just came as one among the 10 scenes. A couple of songs in the second half seem to be inserted forcedly. Though the visuals are okay, the editing needed to be a bit crisper. GV Prakash’s BGM is quite decent.

Matka could’ve become a good entertainer if the writing had been better. Yet, it is a decent one-time watch!
