Plot

Star Performances
The only thing good about this film is the efforts made by the supporting cast.
The senior members of the acting crew did make efforts to look genuine. Surekha Vani, Sriman, and the late Manobala tried their best to save this film from sinking midway.
Analysis
A bilingual film about teenage problems? Nice. The case becomes even more interesting when the narrative is from the viewpoint of teen girls, and not boys. However, beyond this, you shouldn’t expect much from ‘Chiclets.
Teenage dramas are not uncommon in our country. Every industry has tried their hand in this lucrative genre. However, ‘Chiclets’ is not something to be proud of. The film suffers from both an identity crisis, as well as the absence of a proper narrative.
The film aims to explore the sensitive issues of adolescence, conservatism, etc. However, the film loses focus midway, and opts for an easier route: that of sleaze. Some of the scenes are not just vulgar, they are bizarre, having no relevance in context to either the vision or the screenplay.
There is no connection at all between one scene and the other. The way some scenes are executed, you burst out laughing your hearts out, whereas it should have been the other way around. If the director intended to make an engaging coming-of-age drama, he made a mess of it. The lead cast of teenagers themselves looked out of place in several places, and the lopsided editing only made matters worse.
The only saving grace for this film was the performance of the elderly, i.e. the supporting cast. Amongst them, Surekha Vani, Sriman [who played two of the parents], and the late comedian Manobala attempted to make this film somehow watchable.
What's There?
What's Not There?
Verdict
‘Chiclets’ can be a good masterclass on how NOT to make a coming-of-age drama. The script had potential, but the execution by the makers wasn’t. The only saving grace for this film was the earnest efforts made by the supporting cast. Watch it if only for the departed comedian, Manobala. Â
