Plot:

Sofi is the story of Joekuttan aka Jo. His world turns upside down as he falls head over heels for Sofi, who is 38 years old. Sofi is yearning for true love in her life, but little does she realize in what way will she experience it. This movie explores this unusual love and proves that love knows no limits, and certainly no bar.

Star Performances:

The filmmaker Joby should be praised for having the courage to make a movie on such a sensitive subject. Not every filmmaker decides to choose a subject as unique as this for his debut. But Joby had other plans.

Apart from Joby, the lead pair deserve equal appreciation for doing full justice to their roles.

Analysis:

A love story with an age gap? Not a very nice subject to pick up. Especially when the boy is much, much younger than the woman. Not many filmmakers, even in the Malayalam industry would be courageous enough to choose such a subject for their movie, forget making it their debut project.

But not Joby Valayaunkal, who decided to do the unthinkable with ‘Sofi.’ Now it is not that there have been zero instances of such projects in the past. Hindi projects like ‘ Astitva Story soon >> Read More... ’ [the TV series] and ‘ Nishabd Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ did try in this direction. However, ‘Sofi’ is a daunting project, even for an industry as bold and creative as the Malayalam one.

With such projects, the first task is to ensure that the movie depicts the emotional nuances right instead of going astray. On that note, Joby has made an honest effort, though some sequences were not very impressive.

However,‘Sofi’ is not completely a flawless product. Despite being some 2 hours and 10 minutes long, there are a few sequences in this movie that seem like a drag. As mentioned before, some sequences almost mocked the very premise of the movie. However, leaving that aside, ‘Sofi’ is a bold film that does not disappoint.

What’s There?

  • Honest performances from the lead pair of Swathi and Dipin
  • A bold subject presented without malice
  • Earnest debut from director Joby Valayaunkal

What’s Not There?

  • Lack of crisp editing
  • Boring sequences

Verdict:

‘Sofi’ is an adult movie that has more focus on narrative, and less on vulgarity. It could have chosen the easier path, but the director thankfully did not. If you have a knack for the unconventional, do watch this film!
