Plot
Naga, a ruffian from Malnad, is always involved in trouble. He fights with both his mother, as well as society. His only solace is in Meena, whom he loves dearly. However, her parents oppose the match and Meena mysteriously disappears. What will Naga do?
Star Performances
For all the flaws of this film, the makers at least deserve appreciation for attempting to show another region of Karnataka, without tampering with its rustic charm.
Gowrishankar R has taken one hell of a risk as a writer, producer, and lead actor. He has also excelled on most if not all the fronts.
Analysis
Ever since ‘Kantara’ broke the barriers of languages, and became a sensation throughout the nation, it opened doors for many filmmakers to show the rustic charm of Karnataka in their way.
One such attempt is ‘Kerebete’, which shows the local culture of Malnad in Karnataka. The movie centers around a local fishing competition, and one of its popular contenders, Naga. Just like Shivanna of ‘Kantara’, Naga is not exactly your ideal mama’s boy. He fights, he cheats, and he lives life off the edge. However, when he clashes with society for something he holds dear, a drastic transformation takes place.
The first half follows almost the same template as ‘Kantara’. The atmosphere is filled with fun, and the rustic ambiance of the region maintains its charm. However, it is when the social cause takes centerstage, that the film takes a turn for the worse.
The second half is not something unbearable, but the film loses its track at this point. What looked like an homage to the spirit of ‘Kantara’, was lost in the quest to address the ills faced by society. The direction in many places was not up to the mark, and in some places, the editing was also below average. Had it not been for the actors, this film would have been just another good concept gone wrong.

Verdict
‘Kerebete’ is a social drama that had a fresh concept for a change. The rustic charm of the Malnad region and the acting performances almost made it look like we have another surprise like ‘Kantara’. However, the editing and the direction in the second half prevented it from being so. Watch it if only for the performances of the lead pair.
