Plot

Karthik falls head over heels for Nazriya, a PhD student in the same college. However, their backgrounds, as well as their families, won’t allow this union. In desperation, the two decide to elope. Will this work?

Star Performances

The only things that are good about this movie are the music and the cinematography.

Except for these two, there is no semblance of hard work visible anywhere in this movie.

Analysis

Inter faith love stories are not something uncommon in Indian cinema. But a love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl is. A portrayal of such a unique union is bound to have polarizing reactions.

‘Mehabooba’ follows the usual trope of boy meets girl, and the families opposing the union. The story focuses on what happens when they elope. Initially, the pace is good, and the issue is also addressed properly.

However, when the emotional angle comes up, the film takes a downturn. The film has an identity crisis on which path to take. A couple of years ago, an anthology of love stories titled ‘Paava Kadhaigal’ had streamed online, and one of the stories focused on an inter-faith story like this.

However, the approach that the makers took to portray the story is completely missing. The film is devoid of any kind of nuance, and some of the performances look simply caricaturish. Even if the actors try their best, they can’t make up for the mess left behind by the writers of this screenplay.

The only redeeming qualities of this film are its music, and to some extent, the cinematography. The visuals of this movie are above average, and the music manages to keep the audience engaged to an extent.

Verdict

‘Mehabooba’ took the bold concept of inter-faith marriage, and tried to make an interesting story around it. The musical score, as well as the visuals, are great, and almost make the film captivating. However, amateurish writing and unimpressive direction prevent this film from becoming enthralling.
