Plot

Kaalapatthar is the story of a character who gets so infatuated with a statue made in his honor that it starts to have detrimental effects. Shankar was a big fan of Kannada actor Dr. Rajkumar, and he had always dreamed of becoming a warrior. He initially worked as a cook for the Indian army but always longed to fight in the frontline. His family back at the village thinks that he is working as a soldier for the military, and this increases his feeling of inadequacy. One day, this dream of his comes true when some terrorists attack a group of army officers. He fights the terrorists singlehandedly that day. His brave act touches the hearts of many and the news reaches the entire nation. The villagers decide to build a statue in honor of him and he is also promoted to the job of fighting on the frontlines of the BSF. Even though they struggle to gather the money for the resources, they are determined to complete the project. They settle on Kaalapathar (black stone) to build the statue. Shankar’s girlfriend, Ganga, calls him and informs him about this. When Shankar returns to the village, he gets to the statue and gradually becomes slightly obsessed. This obsession ultimately gives rise to various problems.

Star Performance

Dhanya Ramkumar does his role exceptionally well.

Vicky Varun flawlessly expresses his emotions during the emotional scenes.

Analysis

The writing for the film is brilliant and it does a great job in depicting complex human emotions. The metaphors match the film well. Besides this being his debut as a director, and having two jobs, Vicky carries out the direction and acting equally well. The messages in the film are elementary and straightforward. However, the film should have ended with a more memorable scene. The background score used went well with the scenes. The cameraman also nicely captured the different complex emotions and portrayed them onscreen.The cast’s performance was natural and convincing. The transitions from one incident to another are too quick, and the second half of the film felt a bit too dramatic.
