One of the early releases of 2013, the movie attempts to highlight the laudable concept of the right to life and liberty, enshrined under the Indian Constitution, but does it in a rather gripping manner in the format of a mystery thriller with clear overtones of a gradually built up psychological drama. To the credit of its makers, this has been done without trying to sound moralistic or sermonising. In fact the message comes out right at the end and is left to the audience to draw upon it appropriately.

To embellish its theme with visual grandeur, director Aditya Datt Aditya Datt is an upcoming Indian filmmaker and w >> Read More... has chosen the locale of the not so frequented Fiji Islands. This comes as a stark contrast to the murky happenings that take place towards the climax in the film. The main characters, comprising Vivaan and Siya get the chance of a lifetime through an all expenses paid trip to Fiji, by virtue of winnings in a lottery of sorts. To add to their spirits, this comes close on the heels of their next marriage anniversary. Anticipating further winnings through a live game show a la Sach Ka Samnaa, they instead end up buying further disaster for themselves as they move up the rungs of the game needing to perform more dangerous and violent tasks. Interestingly, all this is stage managed by the scheming host of theirs, Mr Khan. It is a virtual three character plot with Mr Khan pitted against the protagonist couple.

The two whose acting needs discussion are Rajiv Khandelwal in the role of the male protagonist, Vivaan, and Paresh Rawaal, as Abdul Razzak Khan, the owner and host of the resort where the couple land, being the obvious antagonist. The acknowledged actor that he is, with his penchant for unusual roles, Rajiv alternates between the display of his handsome manly looks and shades of despair and concern as the game in the movie progresses. While it has been a decent performance from him it may not surely rank as one of his best ones. Paresh Rawal The Padma Shri award winner who shot to fame with >> Read More... on the other hand is disappointing on two counts – knowing his class, the audience expects too much from him in every appearance; but here he also seems to be sadly miscast in the scheming role of the host of the game show. Perhaps he was left wondering where to pitch in between suavity and open antagonism. Left between these choices he takes shelter in his usual stylistic mannerisms, but sadly it does not work here, as the role does not need those comic overtones. Tena Desae Tena Babbar Desae is an Indian actress born on 24t >> Read More... ( and you can keep on guessing if that convoluted spelling of her surname had anything to do with numerology), appears as Siya, the better half of the protagonist couple. She delivers as per the demands of her role, appearing pretty and adding to the overall glamour, while trying to add substance to some of the highly charged scenes. A word about the character of Paresh Rawal’s victimized son, Akram in the film, portrayed by Dhruv Ganesh Dhruv Ganesh was an impressive actor who had a the >> Read More... , would be in order. Although subdued and seemingly merging with the background, his expressions do cast a spell as a hapless and gruesome victim of ragging.

While the climactic portions of the movie, especially the last 30 minutes or so, keeps the audience clutching their seats, the interest wanes quite a number of times earlier on probably due to a patchy screenplay at times, between shades of gripping quality. Overall, director Aditya Datt’s maiden offering is laudable from other considerations like the boldness of the theme and the underlying message it conveys. If last impressions carry the most weight, then most of the audience would be left with favourable impressions of the movie, thanks the climactic scenes of the game show, and gradual unfolding of the reasons behind.

A film on the deplorable practice of extreme physical ragging has never been attempted before, either directly or veiled under a different guise. In the present movie, like the protagonist couple in the movie, many in the audience may also be moved to do some soul searching in this regard. If that has happened, the makers of the film may draw solace from the fact that they have made an impression with their intended message.

The subject being adult, it obviously qualifies as an adult movie, and would definitely cater to those who like gripping thrillers, not necessarily of the murder mystery types. It should also cater to the tastes of those who like an under play of psychological drama, and definitely for those who have been involved in or affected by ragging. To that end it is a meaningful film worth watching.
