Plot

In 2014, Jyoti lost her job at the Chandigarh airport. Desperate for a new life, she finds success, only to realize that her job is that of a garment factory supervisor in war-stricken Iraq. Hardly has Jyoti got time to come to terms with her circumstances, when ISIS militants launch a raid at the factory, and Jyoti is abducted along with several other factory workers, to be sold to ISIS as slaves. Will Jyoti make it out alive?

Star Performances

Though she is known more for her commercially successful roles, it is nice to see Nushrratt Bharuccha experimenting with a new role. She did justice to the role of Jyoti, an ordinary woman stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Apart from Jyoti, Nishant Dahiya, who plays the role of her colleague Rafiq, is endearing in his small but noticeable appearance. Even Tsahi Halevi, who plays a menacing ISIS commander, does full justice to his role.

The camera work of Pushkar Singh is both slick and nerve-wrenching, making you feel you are in that zone of trouble.

Analysis

An ordinary woman is in trouble. She is in the combat zone. She cannot expect any help immediately. Now either our hero makes a smashing entry or some smart diplomacy is activated.

'Akelli,' however, chooses none of the templates mentioned above. For a Bollywood movie, this is surprisingly quite realistic. There are no over-the-top sequences, nor do we have an over-enthusiastic administration ready to go to all stops to achieve the impossible. Everyone knows their limitations, and that makes 'Akelli' quite endearing.

None is unaware of the situation most Indian expats were facing when ISIS captured significant portions of Iraq in 2014. On that note, 'Akelli' does strike a chord. None expected an actor of Tsahi Halevi's level to be a part of this film. But he does a brilliant job as the menacing ISIS commander. If only he had got more screen time.

Sadly, the second half of this movie is a complete antithesis of the first half. The way the ending arrives, it looks like, "Is that for real?" Also, the monkey balancing of the narrative was bizarre and unnecessary. 'Akelli' aimed to be a better version of the Malayalam hit ' Take Off Click to look into! >> Read More... ' [made on an identical theme] but crashed face down in terms of execution.

What's There?

  • Earnest efforts from Nushrratt Bharuccha
  • Good performances from Nishant Dahiya and Tsahi Halevi
  • Brilliant camerawork from Pushkar Singh

What's Not There?

  • Incoherent plot structure
  • Sloppy Editing
  • Bizarre ending sequence

Verdict

'Akelli' is a flick that had so much to offer. It started on an intense note but unfortunately lost its focus midway. Thankfully the acting performances somehow held the flag aloft. If you want a different take on the 2014 crisis, go ahead with this one.
