In the fourth installment of the Transformer series, with a fresh new plot and characters comes another movie about the battle between giant, good aliens and bad aliens, and the humans who come in between them, that in undoubtedly again accompanied by mind-boggling metal-on-metal action throughout all of its 165 minutes.
Plot: After a battle between Autobots and Decepticons has destroyed a city, the CIA is now hunting down all the transformers and killing them off so that they can’t cause any more damage to our planet. In this scenario, Cade Yeager, an inventor/handyman, who comes across a run-down old truck and discovers that it is Optimus Prime. This discovery attracts the suspicious CIA agents to come snooping, but Optimus helps them escape, with the CIA still at their heels. However, the main reason behind hunting down the Autobots is completely something else, of which even the Government is not fully aware.
Just like the previous movies of this franchise, there are most definitely much more robotic aliens action sequences that never seem to end and this time, there are a few more additional Autobot aliens to add to the team. Each and every shot of the fighting scenes is excellently choreographed with so many intricate details; it is almost hard to believe. The plot of the movie may not have been anything extraordinary, but the performances of the actors have been pretty good. The character of Cade Yeager may have been portrayed as the forever underdog who has finally heard his true calling to be the hero, but his always complaining daughter, Tessa and her boyfriend, Shane are so vain and useless in the story that is a shame. The highlight deserves to be the Stanley Tucci’s character, Joshua Joyce, who has some very witty and cynical dialogues that become essential to keep up the mood of the movie.
The director seems to have been concentrating so much more on the actions and the fighting of the alien robots, that the plot has been watered down a lot. The origin story of the Transfomers have been changed and never given much importance to, where the extinction of the dinosaurs have been put on the shoulders of the same alien robots from another planet. Moreover, the action scenes in the beginning may have looked super impressive with the alien robots knowing a lot of crisp martial art moves as well as giant parkour, but after a point of time, these actions start to becoming a drab and the logic behind all the destruction of the fights seem lost.
Verdict: To this mind-numbing dose of powerhouse action that eventually makes you want it to stop, because there’s just simply too much of it, I give this movie, 1 out of 5 victories.
