This movie, starring Blake Lively Blake Lively was born on August 25th, 1987 in the >> Read More... as the lead, Nancy, is a drama thriller dealing with survival. She’s is stranded just 200 yards from shore, but she is in the eye of a great white shark who has been lurking in the shallows. Survival turns out to be a difficult test of patience, wits, cleverness, will, and courage.
Plot: Nancy is a medical student who is not able to cope with the loss of her mother, so she decides to go surf on a secluded beach where her mother surfed when she was pregnant. Somehow, with the help of a local, she finds the beach and is in the water with her surfboard. There are two other local surfers along with her who, in late afternoon leave while she stays back to catch up on one last wave. While she’s surfing on the wave, something hits her board making her loses her balance, and she ends up hitting her head on a rock underwater.
When she is swimming to the surface, a great white shark bites her leg, pulling her underwater. She somehow manages to get free and swims over to a reef where she tends to her injured leg and ties a tourniquet to her leg to stop the bleeding. The next day when the surfers return, she tries to warn them about the shark, but in vain, because the shark surfaces from below a surfer, and pulls the other underwater just as Nancy is trying to save him. Now, she’s injured, trapped and alone, but refuses to lose hope and die here. She retrieves the watch of one of the surfers, then times the shark’s circular swim from the buoy to the shore, and how much time she’d need to swim to safety to save her life.
Analysis: Blake Lively was a good choice for Nancy’s role, and she proves it with her acting. The movie is 87 minutes of pure thrilling action in the waters. The editing could have been better. The narrative is shown more by what’s going on the screen, and the audience judges Nancy thoughts by her expressions or by her actions. The background score is quite apt as well.
What's There:Â
1. The shark appears more real, and the movie seems like something that can actually take place in real life, unlike other shark films.
2. The movie has captured the essence of a horror thriller, and the audience will be glued to the screens.
3. It is not too long and is all about Nancy’s survival.
What's Not There:
1. There is no back story to Blake Lively’s character.
2. The editing would have done wonders to film if it was better.
3. The movie goes slow at a few parts and the last 20 minutes are more gripping.
Verdict:Â It is a thrilling watch, which gives ample of adrenaline and entertainment for the audience and the entire idea is pretty intriguing.
