Plot

The movie is a love story of two people belonging to different classes. Louisa Clark, a twenty-seven years old lady is searching for a job to support her family, who are in dire need of money. She takes the job of a caretaker of a wealthy paralyzed patient, Will Traynor who met with an accident two years ago, and he hates how his life turns out after the accident. Lousia is determined to bring new sunshine to the cynical Will’s life through her care and comfort. Will she be successful? What does the future hold for both of them and their brewing relationship? The movie showcases their story in a mesmerizing way.

Star Performances

Emily Clarke, the fan-favorite ‘Khalisi’ from the ‘Games of Thrones’ series portrayed a different character in this movie from her past choices. This film provided her with the stage to showcase her acting skills. Except for some scenes, she did a fine job in this movie. Sam Claffin’s portrayal of Will Traynor is the highlight of this film. One can observe the transition of his character from a cynical and lost man to a man in love. Patrick played by Matthew Lewis shook off his Neville Longbottom (Harry Potter) typecast character off him. The rest of the cast served the story of the movie with their best.

Analysis

‘Me Before You’ is a sensational, dramatic, and romantic movie. It is a love story of two people who are poles apart. The movie is the official adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes. The movie centers on two characters, Will and Louisa. Will is an affluent banker who meets with a motorcycle accident, while Lousia is a broke twenty-seven lady who wants a job to support her family. Under the given circumstances, Lousia accepts the job of Will’s caregiver. Eventually, they both fall in love with each other just like in any other conventional love story. The movie displays an exemplary direction by Thea Sharrock. She outshines her prior works through this film. Though the story feels to be a highly fictional Disney movie, the director still successfully convinces the audience. The acting performances of the actors in this film overshadow the flaws in the story. Emilie Clarke and Sam Claflin made their characters believable through their acting brilliance. Remi Adefarasin’s exceptional cinematography is praise-worthy. The way he explored the landscapes of Wales in this film can easily leave any person in awe of its beauty. The music did its part in the movie. The movie while navigating through the themes of love and sacrifice, adopts a monotonous route rather than trying something unique. Certain intimate scenes hardly contribute to the story. The latter half of the movie felt a little bit slower with a scope for better editing.  The melodramatic climax ruins the whole build-up of the film’s story.

What’s There?

•         The direction and cinematography of the film is brilliant.

•         The acting performances in the film left a mark and hooked the audience.

•         Exploration of vivid human emotions in the film places well with the main storyline.

•         Depiction of Disability and its consequences helps making the viewers aware.

What’s Not There?

•         Slow Screenplay at times feels boring.

•         A girl falling for a totally dependent disable who makes her suffer felt unbelievable.

•         The unjustified actions of certain characters are major plot holes of the story.

•         Sloppy editing sometimes irritates the viewers.

•         The climax of the film feels a little disappointing.

Verdict

The movie, ‘Me Before You’ explores the complexities of human emotions and thought-provoking themes ranging from love, hatred, sacrifice, faith, and redemption. Through the struggles and challenges faced by a paralyzed protagonist, the story of this movie tries to highlight the struggles and challenges associated with disability. It also depicts the consequences and impact of one’s choices in life. The climax of the film drifted away from the central theme of the movie which left the viewers disappointed. If you are into dramatic love stories or want to explore the intricacies of human emotions, this movie is for you.
