Plot

Teddy, a struggling fitness entrepreneur is fired from his job because of unauthorized advertisement of his fitness band without the permission of the gym he was working for. He couldn’t gather the courage to tell about his joblessness to his wife, so he decided to take her on a vacation to Onancock for her birthday. After he left her at a spa, Teddy mistakenly entered the wrong cabin, where a person was held as hostage. The hostage confused Teddy for a mysterious and brutal assassin who was known as “The Man From Toronto”, and revealed a secret code out of fear. Due to a sudden turn of events, Teddy outlandishly encounters the real hitman known as “The Man from Toronto”. What will happen next? Why the code given by the hostage is so essential? These questions are answered by the further story.

Star Performances

After trying various genres, Kevin Hart returns to play a usual little man who struggles in life. Having seen his prior ventures, this is one of his worst performances not because of his lack of effort but because of the vague and bizarre characterization of Teddy. A man who is a talkative person and speaks so fast that anything he says hardly makes any sense. Woody Harrelson played a brutal assassin, but we rarely saw him angry or cruel. He is a bald man who makes dark jokes, speaks politely, and is respectful in front of women. His portrayal is hardly any different from his past characters. This duo feels like a weird mismatch that fails to make a lasting impact. However, Pierson Fode’s performance elevates the standards, especially in action sequences; he is outstanding.

Analysis

The story of this film is nothing different from what we have seen before in other buddy comedy films, like Central Intelligence Click to look into! >> Read More... , etc. One hardly expects any logical storyline from such films, but this movie’s story goes one level up in absurdity. We see a lazy and failed sport entrepreneur named Teddy, whose fitness products are failing to gain a market. Then we are expected to accept the term-“Teddy-ed” for things he does. Not only this, Teddy disguising himself as an assassin and even convincing the FBI to believe him and then assign a mission to him was anything but believable. The film’s direction is hindered by its poor comedy, which hardly makes anyone giggle and is also overstretched. The action sequences in the movie are the only good think, but that are too disturbed by the low-quality of VFX and special effects. The cinematography and production quality lacked innovation or the zeal to experiment with anything new and different. The plot of miss-matching started well but was lost as the story proceeds. The most crucial flaw of the film is the absence of chemistry between the characters. This buddy dynamic felt forced even after having one of the finest comedy actors in the business. The uninspired chemistry and poor storyline with failed humour make this film a lackluster and forgettable experience.

What’s There?

•   The action performed in the film is the only good thing about it.

What’s Not There?

•     The predictable storyline of the film is a significant drawback.

•     Certain characters are wasted opportunities.

•     This comedy film isn’t funny at all.

•     The pacing issues make this movie sluggish.

Verdict

Rather than wasting time on this film, you must try other buddy comedy films like Jumanji, Central Intelligence, etc. This film is nothing but a failure, sitting on a potential success. After having an excellent cast, a skilled cinematographer, a great production quality still it proves to be a trash film because of its conservative, monotonous and predictable storyline.
