, dies in an accident. Dermot's brother, Matthew Goode, comes and take care of Mia and her mother Nicole Kidman. Mia feels unpleasant on seeing her mother get close with her uncle. When the chief caretaker of the house, Phyllis Somerville, goes missing, Mia doubt's Goode. But she confirms it when she finds the caretaker's body in the basement. After such incidents, Mia gets to know that Goode was behind her, and was writing letters to her from a mental institution, where he was treated. Will Mia be able to save herself and her mom?
ANALYSIS: Director Park Chan-Wook blocks the narrative, when he tries to inject his style to the movie. This film follows a Gothic style. The camera's colors are muted based on the scenes, black and white, and brown at times. Colors also indirectly express the intensity of emotion of the scenes. Many items are captured in detail. Even the clock sound is amplified. The narration seems to be highly strange and perplexed. Visual tricks, such as freeze-edits, scenes with camera swoops, sudden close ups, shaky-cam at the right places, creative scene transitions, helps the audience in having a grip on the story.
STAR PERFORMANCES: Mia Wasikowska has so much of intensity within her character, but fails to express it on screen. Director expresses that her violent behavior is leading to her sexual development.
WHAT'S THERE? Park did a very good job in making a thin plot into a magnificent one. Along with Clint Mansell's musical score, the movie looks like a symphony.
WHAT'S NOT THERE? Few of the character's details such as whether Mia got so much of urgency due to her learning or genetical change is unknown till the end. VERDICT: A beautiful caterpillar's transformation into a violent butterfly.
