Plot

A recovering addict named Jackie is released from her rehabilitation centre and given the opportunity to start a new life, with a clean slate in the Havenhurst residence which is a massive apartment complex in New York Click to look into! >> Read More... city that has appealing Gothic architecture. Here fresh-out-of-rehab individuals get to live rent-free. The only rule they must follow is to never resume their old habits and give in to their addictions otherwise they would be evicted immediately. True to its menacing yet contradictorily attractive appearance, the place has dark secrets well concealed under that pretty façade. Jackie is troubled by the disappearance of her friend from the rehabilitation centre, Danielle, who last lived in the apartment before her disappearance. Soon after she moves in, she meets some of the residents, including a little girl named Sarah and not long after, many residents start disappearing. Sarah’s foster parents also disappear after breaking the rules, after which Jackie takes Sarah under her wing and lets Sarah stay in her apartment. These strange occurrences in Havenhurst lead Jackie to believe that there is something wrong in Havenhurst and makes her suspect that Havenhurst must have been involved in the disappearance or perhaps, even death of her friend. So she investigates, she realizes that the only way to find out what happened to her friend is by breaking the rules of Havenhurst. She buys liquor and proceeds to drink it in her room. She calls a friend of hers, Tim who is a detective and works with the NYPD, and informs him about a secret door in the laundry room that leads to a room that has all the evidence that proves that Havenhurst is involved in a lot of crimes and the owners have killed many. Soon after this, she is chased around by a pale tall man and he ends up catching up to her. Despite the details that Jackie had given, the police don’t do a good job at investigating and the movie abruptly ends with Jackie being tortured and the police leaving without investigating further.

Star Performance

Julie Benz as Jackie does an excellent job at acting as a recovering addict, especially the scenes where she drinks the alcohol.

Fionnula Flanagan Eleanor Mudget’s talent is also evident in her impeccable acting as the posh owner of the Havenhurst residence.

Analysis

The background music used for Havenhurst is appropriately eerie and sinister, however there are unnecessary sudden loud soundtracks used intended as jump-scares during some parts which would have otherwise not even been considered scary if it weren’t for those unnecessary sounds. The gore scenes are disturbing and realistic enough.

What’s There?

  • Realistic gore.
  • Themes of drug addiction.
  • Inspired by the crimes of America’s first documented serial killer, Herman Webster Mudget.

What’s Not There?

  • Unsatisfying ending
  • Unnecessary jump-scare intended background sounds

Verdict

It’s a good movie. Worth a watch. However, there are some intense gore scenes. Go ahead and watch it if you are okay with the gore.
