Black Butterfly is a psychological thriller directed by Brian Goodman in 2017. It featured captivating performances from actors like Antonio Banderas He’s considered to be one of the most famous Spani >> Read More... who plays the role of Paul; Jonathan Rhys Meyers Jonathan Michael Francis O'Keeffe, who is know >> Read More... , who plays the role of Jack; and Piper Perabo playing the character of Laura. Monika Bacardi produced the film alongside Alberto Burgueño and others based on a French film called Papillon Noir that was later turned into a screenplay.

Plot

The movie revolves around Paul, a reclusive and alcoholic writer who lives in a cabin in the Colorado mountains. Paul was having writer’s block and financial trouble. In the nearby town, there were a series of murders that were taking place. After a tense encounter with a truck driver named Jack, Paul offered his place to stay. As Jack stays at Paul’s, he learns that Paul is a writer and is having trouble writing and he gives an idea to Paul to write about their meeting. But everything changes as the storm cuts off the power to the isolated cabin and a game of cat and mouse begins.

Star Performance

The performance of the character Paul, played by actor Antonio Banderas, is profound and subtle; it shows in the movie how his character transitions form desperation to vulnerability. The character of Jack, performed by the actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, projects an intimidating appearance that keeps the audience always on their toes thinking what he will do next. The role of Laura played by Piper Perabo, appears in small doses; the character of a realtor who also happens to be in love with Paul.

Analysis

The screenplay, written by Justin Stanley and Marc Frydman, attempts to interlace a tale filled with psychological tension and moral uncertainty. Goodman captures the oppressive atmosphere of the mountains, which culminates in suspense all through the movie. Through his cinematography, José David Montero represents the contrast between beautiful landscapes and dark ideas. However, at some points, it seems like some scenes are taking too long to end as if they were staged rather than spontaneous; this leads to a slowdown in pacing sometimes during this film.

What’s there?

  • The actors, Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, both deliver compelling performances.
  • The unexpected twists manifest through thrilling quarrels between the lead characters.
  • The suspense and twist of the movie always keep the audience on their feet

What’s not there?

  • The movie’s conclusion ruins what was previously there in terms of suspense and character.
  • Supporting roles such as that of Laura as compared to others had less development.

Verdict

The film Black Butterfly, which is a psychological thriller, film has a captivating plot that is enhanced by the excellent acting of the actors. Despite having little shortcomings, like the ending, it is still an interesting and meaningful movie to watch. To create an enjoyable film for everyone there’s a need to speed it up a little bit more with an adequate development of secondary characters such as Laura, as well as coming up with a more suitable ending that fits properly into the mood and messages communicated throughout.
