Plot

The film follows Nina Geld, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Nina is a stand-up comedian living in New York Click to look into! >> Read More... . Her personal life is in shambles; she drinks a lot, she smokes and takes home a new man every few days. She is also involved in a complicated relationship with a married man Joe, played by Chace Crawford. Joe is also abusive towards her. In her professional life, she has stand-up comedy shows in bars across the city. Nina struggles with the untoward advances male comedians make towards her. When she was presented with the opportunity to audition for a spot on a huge show, “Comedy Prime,” she enthusiastically leaves for Los Angeles. Here she meets Rafe, played by Common, a man, unlike anyone she has was ever involved with. Her past trauma has made her irritable and cynical, but Rafe looks past all this and wants to get to know the real her. Nina is baffled because she has never been in a genuine, loving relationship. The film follows Nina as she tries to move on from her past experiences and embraces the pure love Rafe wants to give her.

Star Performance

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has given a stellar performance as Nina. She has perfectly portrayed Nina’s vulnerabilities, especially her cynicism, anger, and emotional breakdowns. Common has also provided a good performance in the film. The duo has a dynamic chemistry together.

Analysis

The film perfectly portrays how a person who has never received true, unconditional love is baffled by and even rejects any attempts towards a pure, loving relationship. Nina’s past experiences have turned her into an emotional mess. The film shows her journey as she embraces a new life and relationship.
