Arzoo Lakhnavi was an Urdu poet and lyricist. Arzoo Lakhnavi was born as Syed Anwar Hussain on 16th February 1873 in North-Western Provinces, British India. He used to write Urdu poetry in various genres such as qasida, rubai, marsiya, naat, mathnawi, chronogram inscriptions, gazals, and lyrics. He also wrote radio plays and scripts for Urdu films. Arzoo's father Mir Zakir Hussain ‘Yas’ was also a poet. Mir Yusuf Hussain ‘Qayas’, an Urdu poet was the younger brother of Arzoo. Arzoo Lakhnavi's initial schooling was at home and later he went to Lucknow. In Lucknow he studied Arabic and Persian languages.
When he was 12 he wrote his first marsiya. Later in 1942, he came to Bombay and entered the Hindi film industry. He wrote lyrics for Hindi movies like Karoon Kya Aas, Street Singer, Dushman, and many more. Also, he wrote a book named Sureeli Bansuri. Due to partition, he migrated to Pakistan and joined Radio Pakistan in Karachi. He got famous with his ghazals. Arzoo Lakhnavi was also known as Allamah Arzoo Lakhnavi. Arzoo was given the title Allamah with respect for his ghazals. He mostly wrote romantic ghazals. Arzoo Lakhnavi died on 17th April 1951 in Karachi, Pakistan.
