Narayan Hari Apte was born on July 11, 1889 in Samdoli, Maharashtra. He became dedicated to India's freedom struggles through his early encounters with social reform movements. Starting in 1904, he joined Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's Abhinav Bharat Society to support the Indian independence movement. During his literary career, Apte took on many different roles. Through his writings he studied the regular lives of Marathi middle-class people while examining their historical and social settings. He went around many parts of the world while studying Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Nepali, and English, which made his words come alive for people reading them. His first published book was Ajinkyatara in 1909. Beyond his publishing of novels Apte penned collections of short stories plus advice books centered on Hindu family values. Apte initiated Alhad magazine in 1915 and later managed Madhukar. Through his publishing houses Apte & Co and Ajinkyatara Pustkalay, he distributed Marathi literature to readers.
Besides publishing, he worked on Marathi film scripts by adapting his books into screenplays. During India's struggle for independence, Apte supported the RSS and Quit India movement because the organization disagreed with his participation. He dedicated his life to advancing Hindu traditional beliefs, which guided the content of his work. In 1962, he published the final novel of his writing career titled Javanancha Jiwandharma.
