Bhaskar Chandavarkar is a musician, music composer, director and educator who was a prominent figure in the film and television industry. He was born on 16th March, 1936 in Pune, Maharashtra. He completed his graduation from Wadia College, Pune in contemporary music. He also studied jazz and western contemporary music from Fergusson College, Pune. He served as a resident composer and professor in the Film and Television Institute of India(FTII), Pune from 1965 to 1980.

While being here, he composed music for the Marathi play “Ghashiram Kotwal” in 1972 and its feature film adaptation “VamshaVriksha” in 1974. Later, he went to compose music for more Marathi, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada cinema by incorporating experimental blend of Indian classical and western music. He is known to have worked with Merzbow(a Japanese musician), Sonic Youth(an American rock band) and Throbbing Gristles(an English visual and music arts group) and became an experimental blend music enthusiast. He made many acclaimed albums such as ‘The Elements- Fire’, ‘Soundscapes-Music of the Seas’ and many more. He was honored with many awards like Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director for “Swapnapadam” in 1975, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1988 and National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Music Direction for “ Chaitra Click to look into! >> Read More... ” in 2002.He passed away on 26th July, 2009 after a chronic illness.
