Ajit Laxman Wadekar, born on April 1,1941 and passed away on August 15,2018 was an Indian cricket player who represented his country in international competitions from 1966 to 1974. Wadekar, who was dubbed a “aggressive batsman,” debuted in the first class of cricket in 1958 and entered the international arena in 1966. Pataudi led it against New Zealand. He received the Arjuna Award (1967) and the Padmashri (1972), the fourth-highest civilian award in India, from the Indian government. The highest honour the Indian board can give a former player is the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award which he got in 2011. Wadekar was born into a Brahmin household in Bombay. His father wanted him to study mathematics in order to became an engineer, but Wadekar would much rather play cricket.
Before making his Test debut for his country against the West Indies in December 1966 at Bombay’s Brabourne Stadium, he made his first-class debut for Bombay in 1958-59. He there after joined the regular squad and, between 1966 and 1974, he played 37 Test matches for India, usually batting at number three. In addition, he held a part-time position at the State Bank of India. At the time, cricket was primarily played aa pleasure and means of upholding national pride rather than a means of subsistence or a career due to the lack of financial gain. Wadekar claims that at the time, players received 2500 rupees for participating in each test match.
Alongside captain Muhammad Azharuddin, Wadekar managed the Indian cricket team during the 1990s. He is among the select few Indians who have served as captain. The Padmashri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, was given to him in 1972. Additional honours include the Castrol Lifetime Achievement Award, the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Awards, Sportsperson of the Year, and others. Wadekar passed away at the age of 78, on August 15, 2018, at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, from illness. He was cremated in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park crematorium on August 17 with full state honours. His funeral was attended by a sizeable number of cricket players and fans.
