Bhaurao Datar was born in Satara, Maharashtra, India, on January 14, 1903. At the age of 79, he left this world for the afterlife on September 15, 1982. When he died, he was in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Krishnaji Vishwanath Datar was another name for Bhaurao Data. He was born into a wealthy family and moved to Nasik, Maharashtra, in search of a better life. He was a well-known Indian silent film actor well remembered for his portrayal of Maratha king Shivaji in the 17th century. He was a wrestler, a make-up artist, and an occupation actor.

Datar began his career in the silent film period. In Dadasaheb Phalke's silent films, he played the hero. He had a lengthy association with the Phalke studio, appearing in over 80 non-talkies, 20 talkies, and one Hindi film.
Bhaurao Datar had two wives. Kashi Bilwalkar was his first wife, and he had three kids with her. He married Anusuya Vaidya after his first wife died, and they had one son and two daughters together. In the Datar family history book "Datar Kulvrutant," released in 1974, his personal life and notable contribution in roughly 80 films as a lead actor are documented.
In addition, he was known as the make-up magician, Dada Datar. Dada Datar was both a versatile actor and a makeup artist, which was a rare combination. He went to work for Mukherjee's filmalaya, where he worked as a makeup artist on a number of Hindi films. He was the world's most famous makeup artist and the originator of the 'Sadhana Cut.' Bhaurao Datar's prolific and hardworking life will be memorialised in a film by his grandson, Mr. Bharat Kanhere, ex-faculty of cinematography at FTII, Pune, to honour Bhaurao Datar's significant contributions to the film industry.

In his childhood, he used to help his father in his tea stall, and while growing up, he joined a gymnasium. He became a wrestler and won competitions in Nasik Akhada. Datar married Kashi Bilwalkar, and they had three daughters. After the death of his first wife, he married Anusuya Vaidya and had a son and two daughters with her. Datar began his career through silent films while being associated with Dadasaheb Phalke's studio.
Datar acted in 80 silent Marathi films, 20 talkie Marathi films, and a Hindi film. During 1928-1933, he left Phalke studio and joined Nanasaheb Sarpotdar's company in Pune, known as Aryan Company. In 1933, he left Pune for Mumbai's film industry and worked in Ardeshir Irani's company, where he got to act in talkie films. Datar's most popular role was as Shivaji in the silent movie- Agryahoon Sutka (1929), directed by Dadasaheb Phalke.
Some of his other famous roles were Thaksen in the film Prince Thaksen, Dr. Madan in Good Bye Marriage, Ramdas in Bhavani Talwar, Samsher in Samsher Bahaddar, etc. He came to be known as Dada Datar after working as a makeup artist in various films. He was also the creator of the famous Sadhana Cut. He passed away on 15 September 1982 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Datar Kulvrutant (1974) is a family history book where Datar's personal life has been documented.
