Kureepuzha Sreekumar is a Malayalam poet, born on 10th April 1955 in Kureepuzha in Kannur, Kerala. Sreekumar has some modern inclinations and he is an atheist. He started his career as a poet and his first poetry book, Habibinte Dinakkurippukal, was published in 1984. He had won the Best Poet Award given by the Kerala University. He is also the winner of the Vyloppilli Award in 1987 for his Malayalam poetry. In 2003, the Kerala Sahithya Akademi announced the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Award for Kureepuzha Sreekumar for Penangunni, one of his best works in children's literature. But, being an atheist, Sreekumar denied getting the award as it was under the Hindu God's name, Sree Padmanabhaswamy. Finally, after eight years, he received the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award for his work, Keezhalan, in 2011.
Sreekumar has also written lyrics for the films too. Kureepuzha Sreekumar is also an orator and he had given speeches at the meetings. In 2018, he was attacked by a group of people for his speech. Before the attack, he took part in the anniversary function of the Kairali library. Later, Sreekumar filed a complaint against those who attacked him and the Kerala cops arrested them.
