Reghu Kumar (Reghu Kumar Varma), a famed music director in the Malayalam film industry, was born on July 13, 1953, in Kozhikode, Kerala. He has two siblings. They are Vijayakumar and Prasanna. From his childhood days, he had an inclination towards Carnatic singing. His mentor in Carnatic music was G.S.Sreekrishnan. Reghu Kumar knows how to play tabla and sitar as well. He received his sitar lessons from Guru Vincent (commonly called as Vincent Master), and learnt tabla from Guru Bal-asubramaniam, a part of the All India Radio.

He started his career at the age of fifteen itself. He used to participate in Carnatic mu-sical concerts. He made his debut as an assisting artist in a concert which involved musicians, form both Indian classical and western background. When he turned sixteen, he joined the All India Radio (AIR). In AIR, earlier he was just a part of it, but later on, he was promoted to the ‘A’ grade musician, and became a music composer. After this, he stepped into the Indian film industry. eghu Kumar worked as a music arranger in Bollywood. He had married Bhavani, an actress. The couple had been blessed with two daughters, namely Bhavitha and, Bhavana. In the year 1979, he started off as an independent music director. He gave four songs in his movie, “Eeswara Jagadeeshwara.” After this, he gave hits back to back. In the 1980s, he worked as the music director in films like Visham, Dheera, Ponthooval, Nadi Muthal Nadi vare, Onnum Mindaatha Bhaarya, Paavam Poornima, and Manassariyaathe. Kanakkinavu, Aryan, Hello My Dear Wrong Number, Maya mayuram, and Boeing Boeing are his other hits. Thalavattam ( a movie of Mohanlal) and Shyama are the movies, the songs of which are the ones for which Reghu Kumar is most known. Ponveene, a song from the movie, Thalavattam, remains one of the most romantic songs of the Malayalam film industry ever. . He had composed songs for many albums as well, some of them are devotional albums. These include Gana Pournami, Festival Songs, Hari Narayana, Thulasimala, Sweet Melodies, and Ehithira Thumpi. His other top songs include Ponmuraliyoothum(Aryan), Chemparathi Poove(Shyama), Neeyen Kinavo(Hello My Dear Wrong Number), and kaikudanna Niraye(Maayamayooram).

Reghu Kumar was a star in the Malayalam Cinema. He had produced seven films and had given songs as a musician in sixty movies. On February 20, 2014, he passed away due to a kidney failure. Reghu Kumar as a person and his songs will always be remembered.
