Jung’s application was accepted to Chung-Ang University's theatre department. During his first year, he shared a room with Ha Jung-woo, an older theatre major. Ha had a significant impact on Jung's life, and Jung subsequently stated that witnessing Ha perform onstage inspired him to pursue a career as an actor. In 2003, it was Ha who pushed Jung to try out for the KBS actors' audition. Jung aced the KBS audition and was quickly signed by top talent agency Sidus HQ. He made his acting debut in 5 Stars, a mobile drama produced by Sidus HQ and broadcast on SK Telecom, alongside four other newcomers from the agency. Jung's first significant break came in the 2004 melodrama series I'm Sorry, I Love You, where he played a supporting part as an actor who falls for his boyhood buddy late in life. It was a critical and financial success and he was cast in two films in 2005.
Jung returned to television in the well-received action drama Time between Dog and Wolf (2007), in which he and Lee Joon-gi portrayed NIS agents, after his first starring part in the little-seen Gangster High (2006). Jung was next casted in Lee Joon-Sunny ik's (2008) as a double bassist in a "consolatory band", who assists the heroine (Soo Ae) in finding her spouse during the Vietnam War. The following year, he starred in Running Turtle as a fugitive pitted against a small-town detective (Kim Yoon-seok) (2009). Jung made his historical drama debut in Ja Myung Go (2009), based on the folktale Prince Hodong and the Princess of Nakrang, playing a Goguryeo prince divided between love and duty. In 2014, he starred in the 1970s-set historical drama Endless Love, followed by Manhole, in which he played a psychotic serial murderer. Jung then appeared in Beating Again, a love drama about cellular memory following a heart transplant. Jung featured in the highly acclaimed medical drama Hospital Playlist in 2020. Jung Kyung-management ho's announced in January 2014 that Jung has been dating Girls' Generation actress and singer Choi Soo-young since early 2013. After attending the same university and church, the pair got closer.
