Uttam Tupe was an Urdu writer of Indian origins. His full name was Uttam Bandu Tape. He was born and brought up in Satara district, near Pune in Maharashtra. Uttam was a great writer who wrote on unconventional themes revolving around social causes. During his lifetime, he has written several novels, plays, short stories, and poems. His body of work includes Zulwa a novel that was also seen as a stage adaption in Marathi theatre, Katyavaraci, Kalasi, Jhulava, Jhavala, and Andana.
His writings had varied themes from the oppression of Dalits to the Devdasi culture in India to the Caste System. He has also written a short story on the catastrophic dowry system prevalent in India. His novel Zulwa was the result of his actual experiences of living in a devadasi colony for 2 years to write the novel. After this, he was also known as ‘Zulwakar’. He was honored with the Best Novel Award by the Marathi Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad.
