Mahadevshastri Joshi was born on January 12, 1906. He was a famous Marathi writer with hundreds of published books. When he turned 70 he was given the epithets Shastri and Pandit following his education in a Sanskrit pathshala in Sangali. While a student, Joshi was known to frequent the public library in Sangli and widely read the works of modern Marathi writers of his time like Narayan Sitaram, Phadke, and Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar.Â
His novels were highly influenced by a writer known as Khandekar who wrote dozens of novels such as Marathi Saraswat, Purush Suktam, Teerthaswarup Maharashtra, Maharashtrache Kanthamani, Marathi Lekhak, Mulyawan Goshti, Maharashtrachi Dharatirthe, Sanskrutichya Pranganat, Tirtha Kshetranchya Goshti, Dnyaneshwari Praweshika, Shri Nawanath Kathasar, Kanasat Pikali Motye, Bhimachi Madhukari, Bharatiya Murtikala, Sanskrutichi Pratike, Minakshi Kanya, Navanit Bharat, Gajati Daiwate, Daso Digambar, Kala Bhandari, Mani Mekhala, Ugra Pandya, Nakshatralok, Satya Dharma, Nilamadhav, Pushpadanta, Dindir Wan, Satwadhir, Tyagaraj, Bahubali.Â
Joshi wrote two autobiographies titled Aamacha Wanaprastha (1983) and AtmapuraaN (1985). Also, Joshi wrote several collections of stories: Dushyant Shakuntala, Khadakatale Pajhar, Kalpit Ani Satya, Katha Sugandha, Pangala Arun, Sati Sukanya, Manju Mangal, Kalpa Wruksha, Kiriti Arjun, Babhruwahan, Dhumdhumar, Kanyadan, Mohanwel, Niladhwaj, Gunakeshi, Ghararigh, Bhawaba, Putrawati, Pratima, Wirani, and Lage Bandhe. Joshi also wrote Travelogues: Priya Bharat, Jammu – Kashmir, Punjab – Haryana, Uttar Pradesh: Bharat Darshan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Odisha, Bengal, and Assam – Manipur. He died on December 12, 1992.
