Romit Raj was born on 9th July, 1980 in Kolkata. He came to Mumbai when he was just 1 year old. He spent his 10 years in Mumbai. At the age of 10, he went back to Kolkata. It was in Kolkata that he completed his rest of education. He subsequently started his modeling career there. It was his enthusiasm for acting that constrained him to join a few theater groups of his college.. He started taking part in several plays of his college and school. Things started to change for him and he was given the chance to work in several Bengali telefilms and serials with some of the reputed directors in the Bengal film industry.

In the year 2002, he shifted back to Mumbai. He started to give audition and soon he got the role of Yuvraj Garodia for the show Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan. He then went on to play the role of Jeet Khurana in the serial Maayka.

At present, he is depicting the part of Varun in Sony TV's show Adalat. However, reports were published showing Romit quitting the show Adaalat. But he confirmed his arrival back in the show. He also suffered injuries while playing the character of Yuvraj Garodia in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann. Romit was supposed to cross a road set on fire. After the completion of the shot, his clothes were badly burnt during the shoot. He immediately laid down the ground only to realize that the ground was covered with pieces of glass. Though he suffered only minor injury yet it was an incident that could have gone wrong for Romit. On 30th April 2012, he tied the knot with . They have a baby named Rehaa Raj.
