(Master of Ceremonies). Considered to be the first luminary of Chhattisgarhi films, Anuj has been kept his spectators glued to their seats for the past two decades. He was born on 15th May 1976 in Bhatapara, Chhattisgarh to Teken Lal Sharma and Dehuti Sharma. He completed his schooling from a local school in Bhatapara and his post-graduation with a Master’s degree in History from Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University in Raipur.
He had always been attracted to acting and singing, the skills for which he started to hone from a young age of ten years. Post-graduation, he joined the Godrej Company as a marketing executive.
He quit his job to follow his dreams and made his debut as the lead actor in Satish Jain’s “Mor Chhaihan Bhuiyan” in 2000. The movie was one of the first few Chhattisgarhi films to be ever shot until the turn of the 21st century. It was such a grand success that some theatres screened it for a record eight times a day while one played it for twenty-seven weeks straight.
Anuj shot to fame overnight, taking his first step towards becoming Chhattisgarh’s first superstar. He was felicitated as the best actor by the Chhattisgarh Film Awards in 2002 and by the Government of Chhattisgarh in 2003.
The next ten years saw Anuj work in one successful movie after another, including “Mayaa De De Mayaa Le Le” (2001), “Jhan Bhulav Ma Bap La” (2003), and “Mayaa” (2009), all three of which were silver jubilee hits. In 2010, his flourishing career culminated when he released nine movies in one year. Two of those films even hit the theatres on the same day.
Anuj also received his third Chhattisgarh Film Award for best actor for his performance in “Mahun Diwana Tahun Diwani.” His later notable projects boast of the likes of “Phulwari” (2013), “Jai Ma Shakambari” (2014) and “Mister Tekuram” (2011), which also won the Grandyara Ranjhanjhar Chhattisgarhi Cine Award for best film. Many of Anuj’s movies have been dubbed into other regional languages of Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Bundelkhandi, Jharkhandi, and Sambalpuri.
He has acted in certain Bhojpuri films as well. Stage and theatre were not left untouched by Anuj’s prominence. He made over three hundred appearances on stage and hosted over 125 shows on television. He was also a radio jockey for the National FM channel, making him Chhattisgarh’s first M.C.
He has enchanted millions with his euphonies in more than two hundred folk and film songs, and a hundred music video albums. He also composed the music for ten of those albums. In 2014, he was bestowed with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of arts.
The UNICEF elected him as their representative in Chhattisgarh. It is presently the longest spell of time where he has not acted in a movie after his last one “Jai Ma Shakambari” was released in 2014.
