Since Wathora, a small town in the Budgam area of central Kashmir, is where Rayees was born, he picks Wathori as his pen name instead of his real last name, Bhat. Rayees Rashid Wathoori is an Indian theatre artist, chairman of the Tulkul Arts and Media Collective, a former president of the Cultural Society of Washington, and sociocultural activist from Jammu and Kashmir. Rayees Rashid Wathoori has studied for his bachelor's degree in arts at Amar Singh College.
