In 1960 he had played the role of the judge in the movie Kanoon, as a caring brother in Mere Mehboob, a zamindar in Jawaab. Ashok Kumar was a pioneering actor who introduced realistic acting. He was the first lead actor who played an anti-hero. He has also mentored many personalities in Hindi cinema. In 1998 he has honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award the highest national award for cinema artists. In 1999 he has also received Padma Bhushan.
