Anurada Kapur is an Indian theatre director, author, lecturer and professor. She is known all over the world for plays like Sundari: An Actor Prepares, The Job, The Sixth River and many others. Anuradha’s parents had a background in theatre. She attended school at the Modern School. She did her Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English from the Miranda House in the University of Delhi in 1971. In 1973, she gained her Master of Arts in English from the University of Delhi.

She got her Master of Arts in Drama & Theatre Arts in 1977 and a Ph. D. in 1980 from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. While completing her school education, Anuradha joined the theatre group Dishantar during its inception. She made her acting debut in the group’s first stage play Adhe Adhure. She worked with Dishantar for a long time and played roles in plays like Billi Chali Pehen Ke Joota and Kanjoos. She then joined the Workshop Theatre University of Leeds where she acted in and directed dramas like Hayavadana, Mother Courage, Lower Depths and others.

Arunadha is a founder of Vivadi, a group artist from various fields, formed in 1989. She directed plays like Tagore’s Ghar Aur Bahar, Nayika Bhed, Gora and Umrao for the group. Arunadha was an English Lecturer at the Bharati Mahila College, DU from 1973-81. She joined the National School of Drama, Delhi as an Associate Professor in 1981. She soon became a professor and then served as the director of NSD from 2007-13. While at NSD, Anuradha directed some innovative dramas like Ibsen’s classic The Wild Duck 1999 with a video installation by Ein Lall, The Sweet Bird Of Youth 2008 using a stage with multiple stages and 2012 adaptation of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde using materials found on campus. Anuradha wrote a book titled Actors, Pilgrims & Gods: The Ramlila At Ramnagar which was published by the Seagull publications in 1990. She also wrote papers like Notion Of The Authentic, On Acting, Deity To Crusader: The Changing Iconography Of Ram and others. She was an advisory editor for the Journal Of Arts And Ideas and Cambridge Guide To World Theatre.

She was a member of Doordarshan’s Screening Committee, Arts Network Asia and the Governing Body of the Kamla Nehru College. Anuradha won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in the Theatre in 2004. She gave an interview in the TV show Guftagoo which aired on Rajya Sabha TV on 23rd February 2013.
