The band initially released a series of singles before launching their debut album, Aalas Ka Pedh, in 2015, and their second album, Vaaqif, in 2018. Both albums were among the top five most streamed rock albums on Apple Music India.

The band's songs predominantly feature Hindi and Urdu lyrics that often touch on topics such as communalism and faith, making them a hit among younger audiences in India. The band cites Lucky Ali, Aerosmith, Nirvana, U2, Porcupine Tree, The 1975, and Alt-J as their musical influences. They aim to add a Hindi indie vibe to their music and attract audiences looking to switch from mainstream Bollywood to other genres. The Local Train originated when Ramit, who had been involved in radio, theater, and performing with various local bands, collaborated with Raman on a song.

Soon after, Ramit met Raman and introduced him to Sahil, a well-known independent musician and teacher on the circuit who had known Ramit since they were in elementary school. Together, they created The Local Train. Abhinav was replaced in the band by Paras in 2011, and he left his civil engineering course at the same time. The band moved to Delhi in 2012 after Raman left his position at TCS to focus solely on music. During this period, they functioned independently, handling management and logistics while simultaneously working on songs and releasing them online. They released several singles during this time, including Aaoge Tum Kabhi, Choo Lo on MySpace in 2009, and Kaisey Jiyun in 2014.
