Born on October 4, 1987, in New Delhi, Kaul was raised in South London where he attended school. During his time in London, he witnessed violence between rival gangs, which made it challenging for him and other students who were not a part of any gang. He turned to hip-hop and rap music to connect with the people and culture around him. Kaul's love for the genre grew stronger, and he began participating in competitive rap battles. After completing his graduation from Delhi University, Kaul pursued his post-graduation at St. Xavier's College in Delhi.

In 2006, he began writing and recording songs and posted them on his Myspace profile and by 2008, he had amassed a small following in New Delhi and had collaborated with artists from the United States and Canada. Kaul released his breakthrough song "Kaisa Mera Desh” in 2010 which became the first Indian hip-hop song on YouTube, and it quickly became the second most-watched video in India, catapulting Kaul to fame. After a few underground releases, he signed a record deal with Universal Music in 2013 and changed his stage name to KR$NA. In May 2014, he released his debut album 'Sellout,' an all-English effort on Universal Music.

The lead single "Last Night" peaked at #5 on the Vh1 Music Charts in India, making Kaul the first hip hop artist in India to do a five-city album tour with a band. However, the music video for the title song "Sellout" failed to make a significant impact due to lackluster marketing and shrinking label budgets. After a two-year hiatus, Kaul made his comeback in 2016 with his Hindi release "Vyanjan."
