Suman Sridhar

Suman Sridhar is a prominent Indian poet, singer, and songwriter. She was born and raised up in Mumbai. She attended St. Anthony’s Girls High School in Chembur. Music came from her roots; her father is a self-thought harmonium and table player, while her mother is a trained classical (Carnatic and Hindustani) singer. When she turned 14, she and her family shifted to New Jersey, U.S.A. She took a degree in Western Music and Women’s & Gender Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Lauryn Hill and Busta Rhymes were Suman’s early music influences. She had worked in theatre, films, and performance art. Suman co-founded the eclectic pop-jazz-rock duo, Sridhar/Thayil, in 2008. Jeet Thayil is a poet, songwriter, and guitarist from Kerala. According to the Rolling Stone magazine, the duo redefines the Indie music in India. Their first album, STD, was released in 2012 and the track, Punk Bhajan, was included in Rolling Stone’s 25 Greatest Indian Rock Songs of the Last 25 Years. Jeet later took a hiatus after their album was released and Suman has written and performed solo pieces with the help of just a looper and keyboard at music festivals like NHZ Weekender (2013) and Zero Festival (2014). As a writer-director-performer, her original theatre productions include The Flying Wallas: Opera Noir (2009) and Yoni Ki Baat (2003). Some of her art & sound design works include Transformation 19124 (2012), Tejal Shah’s Between the Waves (2012), The Kochi Intervention (2014), and many more. She earned both critical and commercial acclaim crossing naturally between genres, languages, cultures, and music. She also earned reputation in the Bollywood industry as a remix specialist and was referred as “Remix Aunty.” She made her interpretations of few classic Hindi films such as OP Bayyar’s Jata Kahan Hai Deewane from Guru Dutt’s 1956 Hindi film, CID, which she recorded and renamed as “Fifi” for the soundtrack of the 2015 period crime-drama film, Bombay Velvet. She also recorded music for films like Aisha (2010), Luv Ka The End (2011), 404 Error Not Found (2011), Shaitan (2011), Talaash (2012), and Jaundya Na Balasaheb (2016). She earned the Google-INK Trailblazer’s Grant 2014 for establishing a multimedia opera and merged it with Tamil folk music. In 2016, she co-produced and debuted in Natasha Mendonca’s documentary-fiction film, Ajeeb Aashiq. This film was screened at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam, where she earned a nomination for Bright Future Award.

Poorvi Koutish was the final contestant in India's famous musical reality show Indian Idol 6. She was born on January 3rd, 1994, in Chandigarh, Punjab. Poorvi Koutis, inspired by her mother, Veenu Koutish, a professional classical singer, started singing at a very early age. She is an Indian professional singer and stage artist, well trained in the genres like pop, country, old classic melodies, Hindi musical compositions, etc. She did her schooling at Chandigarh from KBDAV School, Sector 7. She grew up listening to her family performing, rehearsing and practicing. Her favorite singers and musicians are Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Sunidhi Chauhan, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, R D Burman, A R Rahman and others. Her first stage performance was at the age of three at Chandigarh’s Rose Festival. She won many singing contests. Besides singing, she is involved in reading, writing and acting. She also makes her own music and writes musical compositions. Her mellifluous voice has won her a huge fan base. She learned music from her mother, Veenu Koutish, who herself is a professional singer and holds a masters degree. She was Poorvi’s very first teacher and mentor. Poorvi considers her mother an icon. Poorvi Koutish started performing professionally at the age of fourteen and was part of a band since Class Nine. She was more inclined towards the old English songs of prominent singers like Doris Day, Elvis Presley, Etta James, Stevie Wonder etc. She mostly performed for Army Brigadiers and Cantonments, Mariners, Police Commissioners events, winter balls and for Cricket teams during their test matches in her city. For Poorvi, her journey in Indian Idol 6 was like a roller coaster ride and changed her life entirely. When in 12th grade, she became one of the finalists in Indian Idol 6. She entered the contract with Universal Music. In 2013, she had an album released with them featuring top 4 of Indian Idol 6, named Fabulous Four. The singer has done playback for famous music director Pritam Chakraborty for the title track of the movie named ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ and has been recording with many other music directors. She is part of a group called ‘Sempre Libera’ (an Opera meets Broadway concept) conceptualized by Mr. A. R. Rahman, two times Grammy Award winner. She is also working on some Youtube projects alongside completing her graduation. Poorvi has the opportunity of working with numerous artists, musicians, music directors and has been on tour with talented, famous and well-known people in the music industry such as Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Pritam and currently has been working with A. R. Rahman. After signing a contract with Universal Music, she has been touring domestically and internationally from the USA to Europe, Asia to Africa, Middle East, Australia, etc. performing at venues around the world. All her tours and live performances are managed by and through them. During the Indian Idol tours, she shared the stage with Shankar Mahadevan, Salim Merchant, and Sunidhi Chauhan. This beautiful, confident and immensely talented singer is currently learning to play the piano and also training in Opera from K M Conservatory of music. She has a dream of working with every amazing musician and collaborate with everyone in the music industry. According to Poorvi, the sentence that best describes her and her music is “Unpredictable! Subtle rebelliousness with a purpose”. The “student, dreamer and believer” wants to be known for her music and improve and contribute more as an artist.
