Bharati Vaishampayan is also known as Dr Bharti Vaishampayan. Bharati was born on January 1, 1954, and died on January 19, 2020. Bharati is an Indian musician, singer, and Hindustani classical vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. Bharati started her training in Hindustani classical music—vocal—at the age of 12 under the guidance of Shri Chintubua Mhaiskar of Sangli. She was trained by Shri Baburao Joshi in light classical forms of music like Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Jhoola, and Tappa. She has worked as the former Dean and Head of the Department of Music at Shivaji University, Kolhapur. In 1972, she was first heard on All India Radio. In 1976, she was awarded the National Scholarship for Higher Education in Music by the Indian government.
She earned her master's degree in music from SNDT Women's University in Mumbai in 1982. In 1985, she received her doctorate in Sangeet Pravin from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. In 1990, she participated in several debate programmes, including The Future of Classical Music and Swarlipi of Pandit Bhatkhande, as an expert on the station's selection committee. She received the title of "Best Teacher" at Shivaji University in 1998. In 2022, she was awarded the Sangeetkar Ram Kadam Puraskaar award by the Ram Kadam Pratishthan, Pune, and in 2003, she was awarded the Bharat Jyoti Puraskaar award by the India International Friendship Society, New Delhi. Dr Bharati Vaishampayan has participated in more than 500 live performances around India.
