Phani Majumdar was a legendary Indian film director. He worked in the Hindi film industry. He was one of his time directors to work abroad. He worked in the country of Singapore for a while. He is also recognized for his work in Meena Kumari’s classic ‘Aarti’ which released in 1962 and ‘Oonche Log’ which is a film from 1965. In Singapore, he made a movie called ‘Hang Tuah’ which released in 1956 and was nominated at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival for the Golden Bear. Along with being a Film Director, he was also a scriptwriter. He started his journey in Indian Cinema in the 1930s with the renowned Film Director P. C. Barua. He worked at the New Theaters Studio in Calcutta which was founded by B. N. Sircar. Sircar during that phase made classics like ‘Devdas’. He has also worked in the language Maithili, for instance, his film Kanyadaan which was launched in the year 1965.
