Sofiko Chiaureli was a Soviet-Georgian actress. She was born on 21 May 1937 in Tbilisi, Georgia. She worked predominantly in the Georgian Theatres. She worked in the most prominent theatres of Georgia at that time, The Rustaveli and The Marjanishvili. Her father was Mikheil Chiaureli, a film director and founder of Georgian Musical Comedy Theatre. Her mother was Veriko Anjaparidze, a prominent actress of her time. She had two brothers who were also in the film industry of Georgia. She has always been around cinema since childhood. She went to All Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. She studied in the studio of Boris Bibikov and Olga Pyzhova. While studying at the institute, she met George Shengelaja (Director).
Later she married him and had two sons with him. After, she got married to Kote Makharadze. Chiaureli has played more than 100 roles in cinema and theatres. She started filming as a student. She starred in three movies when she was young: ‘Our Yard’, ‘Story of a Girl’ and ‘Watercolor’. Her prominent works were Sayat Nova (1968), Don't Grieve (1969) Alibaba aur 40 Chor (1979), and The Legend of Suram Fortress. She worked in Soviet-Indian movie ‘Alibaba Aur 40 Chor’ (directed by Umesh Mehra Umesh Mehra is a prominent filmmaker in Bollywood >> Read More... ) in which she played the mother of Alibaba (starring Dharmendra as Alibaba). She was a member of the Jury at the 9th Moscow International Film Festival. She died in 2008 (aged 70) in Georgia.
