Nanda Karnataki was born on 8th January 1939. She was an actress during the golden era of Indian cinema. She starred in both Hindi and Maharashtrian films. She died on 25th March 2014 at the age of 75. Nanda’s acting debut came in 1948 as a child actor on the movie Mandir, she was a very famous child actor from 1948 to 1956. Her big break as a leading movie star came in 1956, when her uncle, a very well-known director at the time, V Shantaram, cast her in Toofan Aur Diya. After her big break, there was no stopping Nanda, as she saw her popularity surge ,and she made hit movies all across the Indian cinema in many different languages like Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi.

Some of the most notable commercial hits that Nanda starred in were “Jab Phool Khile, Gumnam, Teen Deviyan, The Train, Angarey,” among many others. Most of her successful and critically acclaimed roles were when she played the supporting actress where she had the role of “younger sister.” She got her first Filmfare nomination for her supporting role in the film Bhabhi, released in 1957.

She was nominated five times for the Filmfare award and finally won it for the movie Aanchal. Her acting at that time impressed the audiences and some of biggest actors in Bollywood. Dev Aanand was so impressed with her roles as the leading star that he once came to the set of a movie she was working on ,and he promised her that she would be cast as the leading actress in his next film.
