Ahlam Khan is a theatre-turned-film actress. In 2000, she graduated with a Masters in English Literature at the Mumbai University. During school days, she joined the theatre world and has acted in a variety of plays, including Me Grandad ‘ad an Elephant, Ramu Ramanathan’s Shakespeare and She, etc. She also bagged the Best Actress Award at the Mahindra Awards for Excellence in Theatre (META) for her outstanding performance in Purva Naresh Purva Naresh, born on 20th June 1974(age-45 years) >> Read More... and Vijay Naresh’s Aaj Rang Hai.

While she was a student at Mithibai College, she heard about the off intercollegiate play, but her passion for theatre started when she studied college at Mumbai University. Ramu Ramanathan came to the English Department, where she is, to form a play reading group. They worked on the adaptation of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer’s Me Grandad ‘ad an Elephant and they staged it. Since then, she went on to do several stage shows all over the city.

She also performed for supper theatre, which at that time was very popular. She co-founded the Not Quite Theatre banner, along with her fellow students. After the first few years on stage, she started writing for screen, which kept her away from theatre and led people to think that she is no longer acting.

It took her a while before she figured it out what she really wants and when she does, Ahlam started to work with different directors and produced plays including Off Season under the Not Quite There banner. She has acted in English, Gujarati, and Hindi plays. In 2011, Ahlam got married to co-theatre actor, Zafar Karachiwala. In 2013, he made her Bollywood film debut entitled Miss Sundari, a screen adaptation of the stage play, Miss Beautiful, which was written, produced, and directed by Makrand Deshpande.

She also acted in Bijoy Nambiar’s short film entitled Reflections, starring Mohanlal, who played as a lonely 60-year old man. But even though she already acted on the silver screen, the theatre has been her first and last love.
