Karan Dewan originally known as Dewan Karan Chopra was born on 6th November 1917 in Punjab. He completed his studies in Lahore (Which is in Pakistan now). As he was growing older, he realized that he has passion for journalism.
After completing a course in journalism, Karan Dewan started working as an editor for an Urdu film magazine, Jagat Lakshmi. Karan made friends with one of the distributors, Tarachand and with his help, he came to Calcutta. In 1939, Dewan made his first debut Punjabi film; “Puran Bhagat” as the lead role. It was directed by Roop K. Shorey.
He made a strong foundation with his first picture itself. In 1941 he acted in his second film, “Meri Maahi” which was also a Punjabi movie and this picture was a super hit in those days. Though he did not instantly succeed, to earn his livelihood, Karan taught Urdu in the mean time. His life changing film “Rattan” was released in 1944 under his brother Jamini Dewan’s production and directed by M.Sadiq. This is a legendary film with all the famous personalities. Best music director of the times, Naushad composed all the tunes for this picture. All his movies were super hits commercially and socially. Not only was the picture a blockbuster but the music too. Every movie was a classical masterpiece with wonderful tunes. As an actor, he was in the spotlight for forty years and released more than seventy movies. Karan Dewan married an actress who was also a singer, Manju. She stopped working after they both got married. Karan and Maju had two sons and five daughters. After living a superstar life for fifty years in Hindi film industry, Karan Dewan died on August 2nd in 1979 at his home in Mumbai.
