Hiralal is a prominent Indian film actor during the 1920s. He was popular for his performances as a hero, character artist, and even as a villain. Hiralal started his film career during the era of silent films including Shankradev Arya’s Daughters of Today (1928) and A.R. Karda’s Safdar Jung (1930). The Daughters of Today was Lahore’s first feature film, and it established the city as one of the centers of filming in the country, which is now popularly known as the Pakistani Film Industry or Lollywood.
When the sound for films was introduced in 1931, he shifted to Talkies and appeared in over 200 Hindi films until the early 80s. Hiralal has acted in films like Banwara, Sagai, Hamlet, Ek Ke Baad Ek, Oomar Qaid, Prem Patra, Leader, Nadir Shah, and much more. He died on June 27, 1982, and was survived by his son, Krishen Hiralal Thakur.
