Tanul Thakur is a National-award winning film critic, known for effective analysis and different perspectives in reviewing. Tanul Thakur was born on December 20 in Dhanbad of Jharkhand. He comes from an upper-middle-class family of four. His father is a doctor, and his mother is a homemaker. After completing his high school studies, he moved to Bokaro city to pursue his higher secondary education. Cinema has always been a beautiful memory for him, as he says he loved watching movies anytime. In 2006, Tanul Thakur joined Manipal Academy of Higher Education to pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. In college, he served as the chief editor for the college yearbook.
During this time, he got more inclined to films and started exploring world cinemas. In 2008, Tanul Thakur shifted to Illinois in the US to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 2010. Post his studies completion, he served as an undergraduate research assistant at the University of Illinois for some months. Tanul Thakur got his first job as an Engineering Technician Intern at a company in the United States. He has also performed as a power electronics intern and product engineer in Fort Collins. Around 2009, he moved back to India and worked as an editor for Passion for cinema, where he wrote about cinema.
That’s when Tanul Thakur started his journey with films. He explored movies in regional languages and international movies and wrote about his thoughts unbiasedly. Tanul Thakur joined as a full-time film critic for The Sunday Guardian. He has worked as an independent journalist for GQ, DNA, Firstpost, The Caravan Magazine, Mint Lounge, etc. Since 2016, he is working as a film critic for TheWire.in part-time. Tanul Thakur reviews are quoted to be “a breath of fresh air.” His opinions and analysis are straightforward. In recognition of his work, Tanul Thakur received the National Award for Best Film Critic in 2014 at the 62nd National Film Awards.
He has also won the RedInk Award for Best Lifestyle and Entertainment Story. Tanu Thakur served as one of the participating film critics for selecting the IFI’s the best of Indian cinema in the year 2019, where they chose the top ten films, male and female actors for the year 2019. In 2011, Tanul Thakur created the portal called dowry calculator, which satirically calculates the worth of the grooms.
