His father works at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, and his parents are Punjabi immigrants from Burma. In 2000, he graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University. Gandhi reported on political, economic, and human rights concerns in Asia for The Economist, Time, ABC, and CNN after graduating from college as a freelance video journalist. As a cameraman and producer of documentaries and advertisements, he also worked with companies including American Express, Energizer, Yahoo, and Katy Perry.

Motivated by his skepticism towards religious groups, he formed his fictitious spiritual movement under the name "Kumare," which is derived from his middle name, Kumar. He attracted a following in Arizona by pretending to be a bogus Indian guru. His 2011 documentary Kumare, which won the SXSW Audience Award for Best Documentary and was nominated for a 2011 DOC NYC Viewfinders Grand Jury Prize and a 2013 Cinema Eye Audience Choice Prize, was the result of his filming his interactions with his followers.
In 2012, Vikram began working for HBO's Vice as a producer and journalist. He produced and directed the 2016 biopic Barry about Barack Obama, which he described as a "superhero origin story." He also had an uncredited appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Later, he collaborated with Killer Mike and Grass Is Greener to produce and film the Netflix series Trigger Warning. For the comedic series The Guru Inside You, which premiered on First Look Media's streaming platform Topic in 2020, Gandhi reprised his performance as Kumare. 69: The Saga of Danny Hernandez, a Hulu documentary, was also directed by him.
